MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND APPROACH

Our commitment to health and safety is brought to life through the EHS policy and Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS). This framework helps us meet regulatory standards and continuously raise the bar for safety across our businesses. The EHSMS provides the structure for implementing responsible business practices for health and safety, with focus on ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal requirements, driving continuous improvement, and supporting our “Mission Zero Harm”.

At L&T, caring for the environment is central to our business ethos. Through the Environment component of our EHS Management System (EHSMS), we demonstrate our commitment to implementing proactive and sustainable practices across all operations.

EHSMS is based on the following elements, essential to ensure proper implementation:

  • Management Leadership & Commitment
  • Risk Assessment and Management
  • Planning and Procedures
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Incident Investigation, Analysis and Management
  • Training and Awareness and Communication
  • Documentation and Reporting
  • Audit (internal and external) and Assurance
  • Performance Monitoring and Improvement

SAFETY THROUGH LEARNING

Safety begins with awareness and that is why training forms the backbone of the EHSMS.

  • Induction for all: Every employee, subcontractor, and worker—whether permanent or contract—receives safety training before stepping onto a site. Even visitors are oriented and provided with the right protective gear.
  • Screening and onboarding: New subcontractors and contract workmen go through safety performance checks to ensure they meet our standards.
  • Regular training programmes: Covering everything from policies to hazard identification, emergency response, and safe work practices.
  • Specialised training: For high-risk tasks such as working at heights, confined spaces, or tunnels.
  • Adapting to change: Training content is updated regularly to reflect new regulations, audit findings, or changes in operations or manpower.

ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT

The critical aspects of environmental stewardship are:

  • GHG emission management to lower carbon impact
  • Water and wastewater management to conserve and reuse resources
  • Waste management with emphasis on reduction and recycling
  • Sustainable materials to encourage responsible sourcing
  • Air quality management to protect people and communities
  • Biodiversity conservation to safeguard natural ecosystems

FRAMEWORK FOR IMPLEMENTATION Aligned with ISO 14001 standards, the management system ensures systematic integration of environmental considerations into business practices. Key elements include:

  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Plans and procedures built on aspects, impacts, risks, and opportunities
  • Regular training and communication to build awareness
  • Robust documentation and reporting
  • Emergency response preparedness
  • Ongoing performance monitoring and continuous improvement

BUILDING AWARENESS AND CAPACITY

To strengthen environmental responsibility across our workforce, we focus on:

  • Displaying policies, objectives, and performance data
  • Orientation and periodic training for employees and contractors
  • Specialised training programmes for critical environmental areas
  • Engaging communication tools like posters, mailers, and display boards
  • Regular performance reviews and audits (internal and external) to ensure accountability and progress

Every L&T business holds ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 certification, the world’s leading standards for quality management, environment management and occupational health and safety. Independent credible agencies audit and certify our practices—providing assurance that our commitment to safety is both genuine and effective.

SUSTAINABILITY DATA ASSURANCE

The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) format was initially introduced in May 2021, which included reporting of more than 100 KPIs across Environment, Social and Governance. In July 2023, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced mandatory disclosure under ‘BRSR Core’ for certain listed companies in India. BRSR Core parameters comprise environmental, social, and financial KPIs. SEBI has also mandated that the top 150 listed entities undergo reasonable assurance by a third party. Reasonable assurance involves understanding systems and controls in place for capturing sustainability performance data used in the preparation of the disclosures, testing of data, records and relevant documentation, analysis and review of key data management systems, processes, and procedures relating to collation, aggregation, validation and reporting of the sustainability information. For details, please refer to the Assurance Statement in BRSR of  Integrated Annual Report FY 2024-25.
